Seminar by Author Lung Ying-tai, 'When War Does Not End: A Dialogue on The Taiwan Strait 1949'
The Taiwan Strait 1949 (the Chinese title 大江大海1949) has long been banned in China. After 17 years, a simplified Chinese edition has finally been published in Tokyo.
Since its publication in 2009, The Taiwan Strait 1949 has become one of the most significant works in the field of history in the Chinese-speaking world. Through a decade of interviews and writing, Lung Ying-tai draws upon her own experiences to depict life and death before and after 1949, as well as separation (which is neither victory nor defeat) and the profound suffering of people during that turbulent era.
In 2026, as the shadow of war creeps back, rereading The Taiwan Strait 1949 may lead one to realise that this work is also a book about 'peace'.
Yung-tai asks us: In war, is there truly such a thing as a 'victorious' side?
